I have noticed a lot lately that people buy really huge furniture and shove it into tiny little rooms. It makes the rooms look so small and cramped. If you are shopping for new furniture it really pays off to have a floor plan drafted up and plan the room ahead of time. You might not even need to buy new furniture, maybe just edit a few pieces. A small scaled couch and chair is just as comfy and inviting.

In a house I am staging right now there was a huge puffy purple couch and chair that was impossible to get out of the room. It had these giant purple pillows on the top that kept popping up as we were trying to move the couch out to bring in rented furniture. The bottom had recliners that kept popping out as well. Yikes!

Country House Virtual Update

This is a redesign concept board I created for a home which is now listed for sale. I wanted perspective buyers to see what the home could look like. The house is out-of-town and would suit a modern fresh country look. New classic white kitchen cupboards and white french doors in the dining area would add a lot of character.

This is how the kitchen looks now, not a lot of character and very dark looking.

In the living room built-in book cases and a fireplace would look great. wainscoting in the dining room would add a classic touch.

Reclaimed wood adds warmth, character and looks beautiful when mixed with glass and stone. I like the thought of injecting some history into a new home as a lot of reclaimed lumber is repurposed from barns, factories and warehouses.

Painting Tip

If you want to highlight your trim in a room you might try painting it a shade darker than the walls. In this picture the walls are Benjamin Moore Summer Shower 2135-60 and the door trim is Deep Silver 2121-60.

I love the green painted trim around the window in this kitchen. It ties in with the other accents scattered around the kitchen. Remember, to have a cohesive look you only have to tie the accent colour in three times in the room.
